Aaron Swartz is the co-founder of the social new site Reddit. He is a computer programmer, writer, political organizer and Internet activist. On January 6, 2011 Swartz was arrested by MIT police on breaking and entering charges (Kao, 2013). This was for systematically downloading academic journals articles from JSTOR. Swartz wanted everyone to be able to have access to these journal articles even if they did not attend MIT. This says that even under a harmless act like trying to make information accessible to all people for the benefit of their education, US law doesn’t care and he is treated as a harsh criminal. Swartz received 35 years in prison and $1 million in fines for trying to educate people (Schwartz, 2013).
